School
This group meets in the Sports Hall at St.Peter's School on Monday afternoon at 5.00 p.m.until 6.30 p.m. Few of the members had actually played before, while for others it had been 20 years or more. Although it is a pleasure to win we are not aggressively competitive, just thoroughly enjoying the fun and exercise. Racquets are kindly supplied by the school. You just need a pair of suitable shoes and your energy. We have about 10 members at present but would welcome more                                                           .

leader's

With the vagaries of holidays, weather and illness we usually have a maximum of two tables playing at our Thursday evening meetings.  We have members who depart for the winter and return in the spring. Because we play in a home we only have room for three tables anyway.  We do not play advanced Bridge.  We teach beginners up to the point where they can now beat us and we treat it as more of a social evening with many of us still members from the inception of the group.

Friday.
. The group is informal.  Members do not profess to be high grade players but nevertheless achieve enjoyable sessions.  We are too informal to record games, nor do we play with clocks.  We have never played a formal match.  We meet at my house and could accept two new players.  We could teach the game to any prospective learner.  The game can be enjoyed at all levels of players' abilities. The "Photography Group" started in the middle of 2003, when digital was relatively new.   In fact I was using the traditional film Nikon SLR but as various members came along with their new shiny digital cameras, it wasn't long before I and others joined them.  We of course required computers, photo software and printers, and it didn't seem long before all members had the necessary equipment.  We have been taking pictures, manipulating and enhancing ever since. After a short period we decided to call our group, "The Digital Photo Group" and we happily continue with some of the original members.  Any new members would be most welcome. Discussion First
Monday
8p.m.
. The U3A Discussion Group meets on the first Monday of the month at a members house at 8pm.  We are usually about eight in number .  Over a glass of wine and nibbles we discuss a topic which we hope will be controversial and stimulate thought and an exchange of views. We should welcome one or two new members.  Should we get enough people interested we may even initiate a rather more formal debate type of event but to date there insufficient numbers for that format. History
Second Thursday . We research in all parts of the country, looking for the building blocks that make us and our families very special. It is a fascinating hobby that takes us on a journey, to all sorts of places, and also enables us to make many friends. It is great fun being a detective, and piecing all the
information together. TEMPORARILY SUSPENDED MAY 2009

Foodies Monday
morning
monthly
. The Foody group is aimed at members who really enjoy cooking and sharing culinary hints and experience. We meet in members' houses once a month and the host/hostess usually provides coffee and biscuits but we do not cook at our meetings.  We've shared our kitchen disasters, produced gadgets we really use, had a soup tasting and quiz and planned a fantasy dinner party.  At one of our meetings we had a bitter chocolate tasting which proved unsurprisingly very popular!  Our Saturday outing to the foody's paradise at Borough Market was much enjoyed . french
French . . Meeting weekly in each others houses, we read French articles & books together and translate them, sing French songs & listen to tapes.
Usually one or two people read out pieces they have written about recent holidays  or other events. This often leads to discussions.
At present our group is fully subscribed.

Gardening . .
This Group is mainly a discussion group.  We learn from each other and I organise different  Gardening topics and occasionally a competition  (just for fun - no prizes) .
Members are encouraged to bring cuttings of flowers and shrubs from their gardens to discuss.
We meet once a month, usually on the 3rd Wednesday, at 10.30am for about one and a half hours at each others houses.
My group is full  as at July 2007 with 13 members and there is a waiting list  -  sorry.
         HAPPY GARDENING
Gardening Too

usually
2nd Tuesday
2.p.m.
.
This group plays away, in that, apart from meeting at members houses to admire their weeds we do go out and about to visit proper gardens & garden centres.
eg In July we went to East Bergholt Suffolk, a walk round the garden followed by a pub lunch & then a meander round the garden centre.  We share cars to keep the expense to a minimum.
We  visit Hyde Hall RHS garden sometimes & have lunch there. Members can take their own if they wish.  One can go there 4 times a year & see four different seaons display.
In February we are due to carry out the second stage of pruning the Group Leaders Wisteria !!
And of course we have coffee, tea & biscuits at our home venues.                                     back to list

History Third
Friday
2p.m.
Museum The History Group is now about four years old and we've covered a really wide range of topics from the real story of Christmas celebrations, William Harris who was a local 'Jack the Lad' in Tudor times, Henry Mayhew and his work on the Victorian underclass, the real Humpty Dumpty aka  Cardinal Wolsey, been asked to sign the 'Official Secrets Act' during a talk on secret aircraft production, and seen a fascinating demonstration of bow-making and archery  with an opportunity to fire a longbow at a target. I try to vary the programme with occasional films and we have an outing in the summer to finish the 'term'.  Last year we visited  Hylands House and in June of this year we went to Bletchley Park.  As we meet in the Museum there is no limit on numbers so any member is welcome to come along. Latin Monday
fortnightly
8 p.m
Group leader's
house
The Latin Group started in 2005 with a 'mixed ability group', with some of us having learned no Latin at all, and some with 'O' levels etc. which had become very rusty.  We therefore began with a light-hearted attitude and 'Minimus' ( a mouse living with a family in Vindolanda, a Roman fort on Hadrian's Wall). I should also confess that this was written for 7-11 year olds!!.. These amusing text books served us proud and we have progressed to higher things.  We are serious about learning, fortified by a glass of wine (in true Roman fashion), and later in the evening relax with coffee. would welcome some new members. Just  come along or see Sandra at the monthly meeting.
book
Literature Second Tuesday. . The group meets on the 2nd Tuesday of the month to discuss a book chosen the previous month. The discussion is analytical and animated. Members pool their ideas of which books to read resulting in the enjoyment of a wide range of reading matter, which proves to be both stimulating and challenging to all. Members are also enthusiastic in supporting the Essex Book Festival annually. As the group prefer to meet in members' homes numbers are restricted but vacancies occur from time to time.  back to list

. . This group meets monthly and is very informal.  Each meeting has a previously decided theme e.g. American music, film music, musical shows etc.  Members also play music of their own choice which can, perhaps recall a holiday or other occasion.  Members take turn in hosting the evening meetings which are accompanied by a glass of wine and nibbles.  The group could accept up to three new members.  email  burnhillp@hotmail.com                                                              back to list

Burnham
We meet in the Victoria Inn at the bottom of Burnham High Street at 3p.m.on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Because it is a pub, restriction on numbers is rarely a problem. We decide on a topic or philosopher to be discussed at the next meeting and find out from books or the internet the relevant details. In Philosophy there are no right or wrong answers so new members can either speak or listen. It sounds like an academic subject but is really about opinions.

Reading
Second
Friday
2p.m.
. Play Reading was one of the first groups to be formed in the Burnham U3A. Meetings are held one afternoon per month.  The Group Leader chooses either a two-act or three-act play and each group member reads one or more parts. The plays cover comedy, melodrama, historical, classical and thrillers ranging from well known playwrights to the lesser known.
Poetry
Reading
Third
Wednesday
2.00p.m
. The Poetry group meets once a month.  The subject for poems to be read is chosen at the previous meeting.  Members, therefore have one month to explore and choose their particular poems and poets. Members have three or four prepared ready to read.  Each poem and poet is then discussed following the reading.  This is a very informative way to learn more about poetry and poets and so stimulates interest in a subject which is not so "fashionable" at this time.

vicinity. If it is actually raining/snowing at midday, the walk is
cancelled. There is no charge and no obligation to notify anyone if not

comfort, but still achieve the benefits (& calorie loss) of the exercise.                        back to list
